Teaching genre is vital in the language classroom not only because it exposes students to many different text types but also because it shows them how to use language more efficiently. Every genre has its own features and language that are intended to suit a specific field of writing. As students encounter different kinds of text, they can explore how language and texts are created for different purposes. The more familiar our students become with different genres and their particular features and language styles, the better they can comprehend them. Students also need to be able to recognise an author’s purpose and be able to read between the lines. Good examples of genres can function as model texts that show students how to write in them. With this help, students learn how to structure a piece of writing, organize their thoughts and become more effective as writers.
