Many African contexts have a long history of using English and, what is more, using it creatively. Teaching Africa therefore has a lot to offer for the EFL classroom, but it also has a lot to offer beyond, as the contributions assembled in this issue demonstrate. This introductory article focusses on ways of reading Africa that challenge reductive images of the continent as a remote “other”. A good starting point for this is engaging with Africa’s literatures and arts.
