The Caribbean is a region with a history of colonisation, climate catastrophes and political uprisings. Hurricanes and earthquakes are abundant. Since the 17th century, the islands have been subjected to colonial powers which largely used imported African slaves for the plantation system. Numerous rebellions have taken place; not only did slaves rebel, but also the white descendants of colonisers. Poverty is widespread. All of these factors have
led to big migration waves. Thousands of victims of earthquakes and hurricanes, political refugees and people trying to find a better life have sought refuge in the United Kingdom and the USA.
